Appliance Maintenance Tips

Appliance Maintenance Tips

Just like your car and home, your appliances need regular maintenance too. A little bit of cleaning and care, along with proper use, can not only help prevent breakdowns, it can make your appliances more energy efficient. Follow these tips to get the most out of your appliances.

Clothes Dryer Tips

Use your clothes dryer to remove as much pet hair as you can from items before placing them in the washer. Too much pet hair can clog a washer’s drain pump and lead to a breakdown. A quick spin in the dryer will help you easily remove excess hair, especially in the spring and summer when pets shed. Just be sure to clean the lint filter and wipe down the inside of your dryer afterwards.

Regularly clean the lint filter and also the venting to prevent dryer fires. One sign of dirty or clogged venting is your laundry takes longer and longer to dry or is not completely dry at the end of a cycle.

Range or Oven Tips

Never use the self-cleaning function on your oven right before a major holiday, like Thanksgiving, unless you want to call for an emergency appliance repair.  The self-cleaning function causes your oven to reach incredibly high-temperatures, which could stress parts that are already weakened. Instead, clean your oven several weeks before a major holiday and be sure to use it before the big holiday event.

Inspect your glass oven door for cracks. Never set anything heavy on your open oven door, as it could damage it.

Do not use aluminum foil to line your oven as it could melt onto the surface of the oven floor. Instead, use a cookie sheet to catch any drips of spills from items you are cooking.

Dishwasher Tips

Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter that needs regular cleaning. Be sure to clean your filter to prevent any bad smells from your dishwasher.

Run your dishwasher through an empty cycle, or use the self-cleaning cycle on your dishwasher in order to clean it. Some stores carry special dishwasher cleaners that help destroy smells and remove detergent buildup from inside your appliance.

If your dishwasher is not cleaning as well as it once did, check the dishwasher spray arms for any food particles stuck in the water dispersal holes. Use a needle or toothpick to remove any items blocking these holes.

Washing Machine Tips

Replace worn rubber fill hoses with stainless steel hoses in order to prevent water damage to your home.

Use the correct detergent, especially if you have a high-efficiency (HE) washer. Using the wrong detergent can lead excess detergent on your laundry and also possibly damage your appliance.

Do not stuff or overfill your washer as space is needed in order for the detergent and water to properly circulate and clean your laundry. Overfilling your machine could also lead to extra wear-and-tear on parts and could lead to a breakdown.

Refrigerator Tips

Clean the condensor coils on your refrigerator to prevent any breakdowns. Over time, the coils can become dirty making it harder for your refrigerator dissipate heat and remain cool. The coils can be located on the bottom or in back of your refrigerator. A condenser coil cleaning brush makes it easy to clean this part of your appliance.

If water is condensing or beading on the walls inside your refrigerator, check the gasket seal around your refrigerator for any cracks or sagging. A refrigerator seal that is no longer sealing tightly could be the cause of water condensation inside your fridge and can be replaced.

If the water dispenser is dispensing water slowly, try changing the water filter on your fridge.

Freezer Tips

Do not stuff or over pack your freezer as you could be blocking the air vents that the freezer needs in order to send cold air into your refrigerator.

When freezing foods, it’s best to wrap or store items using freezer-friendly zip-top freezer bags, aluminum foil, or heavy-duty plastic wrap to protect items from freezer burn.

If the refrigerator is warm, but the freezer is nice and cold, then there could be a problem with defrost system. Cold air is created in the freezer and is circulate into the refrigerator. It’s best to call an appliance repair professional in order to diagnosis the problem.
